What file format are you trying to upload? JPEG or Bitmap? Do you have a pc or a mac? I can recommend some programs to reduce the size. You can also change the resolution on your camera to help with the size problems.

I used microsoft office picture manager. Open the picture in that program (it is probably set as the default picture viewing program) and right click the picture. Select "edit photos" and a menu will appear at the right of the screen. Click "Compress" in that menu. Check the bubble next to "e-mail messages" and then click OK. Save the picture with whatever name you want. I usually just keep the same name but put comp for compressed to keep my pix organized.

I found a freebie from Microsoft. Its called image sizer. just install, right click on the image, choose the size and you done. It will let you do one or many so you can do a entire folder at once.
It can be found with the power toys on Microsoft website.
